Along with excellent spirit and personal skills, a judge should be an expert at legal knowledge to analyze complex cases and deliver sound legal decisions. To become a judge one has to qualify in the Judicial Service Examination conducted annually by the Public Service Commission of respective states.

About the Examination

The Judiciary Examination is held in two stages namely Judicial Service Preliminary Examination which consist of only objective questions, followed by the Judicial Service Main Examination. Only those who are shortlisted from the preliminary examination will be qualified to appear for the Mains. The final mark list will consider the scores in the Preliminary examination along with that of the Mains and Viva Voce. Even though the scheme and syllabus for this exam may slightly vary from state to state, a standard and disciplined format of thorough learning can enable any law graduate to crack this examination.

How to Prepare

Anytime during or after law studies is the right time to prepare for this examination. In case of a time constraint situation, an ideal three months of methodical preparation would be enough if you have sufficient knowledge of the subjects. If you are in the first year of studies there is a possibility of not being able to comprehend certain subjects. On the other side, preparation of notes right from the initial days of law school could help in recollecting concepts from each and every subject. However, starting preparation after law school is also said to be effective because it can provide one with momentum and clarity on the subjects

To clear the prelims one has to have an overview of the subjects and the landmark cases related to them. Illustrations and provisos of sections should not be left unattended. Whereas, it is the fundamental understanding of concepts what is indispensable in preparing for the Mains. It requires a questioning attitude towards the principles of law as well as the ability to critically analyze them.
There are different ways through which you can start your preparation for this Examination. The first and foremost step is to know the date of exam and estimating a time plan for preparations. Taking a mock test and paying attention to previous question papers will help you to make a self-assessment of your legal knowledge. The next step is to understand the syllabus for the exam which can be availed from the authorized websites of each state. Joining a coaching institute, though advantageous is not always necessary if you are a dedicated and committed aspirant. The bare acts of statutes and related textbooks are themselves the best tools for self-study.

Apart from this one must be updated with the current affairs and general knowledge by reading magazines and newspapers on a daily basis. Preparation of notes during lectures and reading is very important as far as the Main Examination is concerned. With a diligent study plan and strong determination, the Judicial Service Examination is not a hard nut to crack.
