Founded in 1992, Equality Now fights for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women and girls around the world through legal advocacy. Working with grassroots women’s and human rights organisations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilises national and international action to support efforts to stop these abuses.


The Associate’s/Consultant’s main responsibilities will be:

Networking and collaboration:

  • Keeping abreast of key women and girl’s rights issues in the region [Output: analysis of key issues in the region, updated as necessary];
  • Establishing, developing and maintaining contacts with local women’s rights organisations in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka and at the regional level
    • Identifying the key issues, priorities and campaigns that they are working on [Output: record of key priorities and documenting possible collaboration points where Equality Now could add value; database of contacts];
    • Identifying other international and regional organisations also working on ending sexual violence in the region [Output: database of contacts]


  • Engaging with actors to develop a nuanced understanding of the following issues and Equality Now’s added value in each of the target countries – India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka and ensuring the organisation is up to speed, including:
    • sexual violence and social and state responses to them
    • key socio-economic drivers of sexual violence and responses to them
    • existing legal provisions, gaps and weaknesses in the laws and or their implementation, supplementing Equality Now’s existing information
    • opportunities and challenges in practices and institutions
    • identification of the key actors and their role in perpetuation, prevention, protection or punishment [Output: research briefs, fact sheets, reports as necessary]
  • With partners, identifying potential cases of violations, including of adolescent girls’ rights, for strategic impact litigation and/or advocacy campaigns using Equality Now’s criteria for selection of cases and make recommendations as appropriate [Outputs: document potential cases; contribute to brief drafting]


  • Providing recommendations on campaigns and direction, strategy and partnerships, in line with Equality Now’s Theory of Change [Output: short briefing papers; contribution to treaty body and similar submissions]
  • Participating in the implementation of resulting advocacy campaigns [Output: engagement with partners and relevant authorities/stakeholders and documentation of progress]
  • Collaborating with Equality Now’s media and communications team to provide content and comment emerging from our work in the region [Output: co-creation of content]

Other duties as reasonably requested

  • Participate in and contribute to Equality Now staff meetings including all relevant thematic groups discussions
  • Prepare original correspondence (including e-mail), minutes and reports with specialised content, in appropriate writing style
  • Research, analyse and communicate specialised information and best practices to inform work planning
  • Contribute to fundraising proposals as necessary


  • A degree or equivalent proven experience in a relevant area (such as law, public policy, human rights or gender issues). Law degree strongly preferred;
  • 2- 5 years working on women’s rights or violence against women. Experience working with marginalised communities is preferred;
  • Ability to represent Equality Now as a recognised expert in the field of women’s rights using international human rights instruments to protect the rights of women and girls;
  • Significant knowledge of the region and the context for women and girls’ rights
  • A flair for networking, collaboration and bringing people together in common cause
  • Excellent research, analytical, conceptual, writing and editing skills and use of computer software;
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills;
  • Competent use of computer programmes (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc) for effective communication;
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills;
  • A self-starter with the maturity to operate in a variety of environments and the ability to effectively manage priorities and time and meet deadlines in the context of a geographically dispersed organisation;
  • Working proficiency in Hindi is strongly preferred;
  • Ability to travel throughout the region when possible;
  • Integrity in representing the organisation and its work to all partners;
  • A sense of humour is much appreciated and often needed.
